Goa is taking bold strides toward a sustainable future, with the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL buses) set to make nearly 60% of its fleet electric by 2027. This major shift marks a turning point in the state’s public transport story and positions Goa as one of India’s frontrunners in green mobility.
According to Mahendra Pednekar, General Manager and Deputy General Manager (Technical) of KTCL, the transformation journey began in 2021 when the corporation formally embraced electric mobility with the introduction of 50 electric buses. In 2022, the fleet was expanded by another 100 nine-meter e-buses.
Currently, KTCL operates 156 electric buses across Goa, with more than 190 additional electric vehicles planned for inclusion by 2027. The move aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals, supported by the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ initiatives that focus on strengthening the nation’s green transport ecosystem.
The first major step was taken under the Smart City Mission, deploying 48 e-buses in Panaji to connect beaches, Goa University, and popular tourist destinations. These routes now offer services every 15 to 30 minutes, ensuring convenient and eco-friendly travel for both locals and visitors.
“This was the beginning of a journey, not just for KTCL but for the state. The idea was simple — move towards a cleaner, greener, and sustainable public transport system,” said Pednekar.
As Goa continues to electrify its fleet, the state stands as an inspiring example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand-in-hand, setting a benchmark for other regions in India to follow.
