Goa Government to Launch Crackdown on Abandoned Vehicles in Panjim and Across the State

Goa Goverment

The Goa government is set to begin a major crackdown on abandoned and unclaimed vehicles left on public roads, as these have increasingly become a cause of traffic congestion, safety hazards, and inconvenience for citizens.

According to official sources, the State authorities have been instructed to take strict action against vehicles that have been lying unattended for long periods, especially in busy urban areas like Panjim.

Abandoned Vehicles Creating Public Safety Concerns

Abandoned vehicles, including two-wheelers and other automobiles parked along roadsides, have been obstructing traffic movement and footpaths across Goa. Officials stated that these vehicles not only disrupt daily commuting but also pose serious environmental and security risks.

Residents have repeatedly raised complaints about such vehicles occupying public spaces, yet many owners have failed to remove them despite warnings.

Scrapping and Removal Approved Through GWMC

The Home Department has now permitted the removal and scrapping of abandoned vehicles through the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).

This initiative will ensure that vehicles found unclaimed or abandoned will be officially handed over to the Corporation for further disposal through the State Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF).

Drive Likely to Begin in South Goa

Officials confirmed that the drive is expected to start in the South Goa district first, as the Home Department has already granted approval to the South Goa Collector.

The Collector has been authorised to remove abandoned and unclaimed vehicles across the district through GWMC, following due legal procedure.

Vehicles that are not claimed by owners will be forfeited in favour of the State government.

Vehicles Will Be Towed and Sent for Scrapping

Authorities said that vehicles identified as abandoned will be towed away and sent for scrapping in accordance with existing rules.

The main objectives of this crackdown include:

  • Reducing traffic congestion
  • Improving road safety
  • Clearing footpaths for pedestrians
  • Restoring public spaces
  • Addressing environmental and security concerns

A Step Towards Cleaner and Safer Roads in Goa

This initiative is expected to bring significant relief to citizens, especially in high-traffic areas where abandoned vehicles have become a growing problem.

The government’s action reflects a strong push towards maintaining cleaner roads, safer public spaces, and smoother traffic flow across the State.
