Get ready to batten down the hatches, Maharashtra. Cyclone Shakti, the first cyclonic storm to brew over the Arabian Sea this season, has been rapidly intensifying. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirms that this powerful system is heading our way, meaning a significant spell of rough weather is imminent, especially for the coastal areas, including Mumbai.
While the eye of the storm is expected to remain offshore, we won’t be escaping its effects. The cyclone’s vast outer bands are set to unleash a torrent, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the state in the coming days.
The biggest concern lies inland. Interior districts, particularly East Vidarbha and Marathwada, are on high alert. Forecasters predict that the heaviest downpours will hit these regions on October 3rd and 4th, potentially turning streets into rivers and causing flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in North Konkan.
